Black Swan Prize for Portraiture - Creative Initiative

Hi everyone.

My name is Tina Wilson and I would firstly like to thank Natalija Brunovs for her fantastic work in creating a forum for us all to come together. Perth is a fantastic city to live in and will only improve over time, especially if we all work together with one aim in mind… building Perth’s Creative Capital.

My contribution to this is the creation of an exhibition/competition to be held at the Perth Town Hall in September this eyar (details listed below), please take a moment to read about my project and if you are interested in participating in any way, shape or form please call me on 0432 275 690. (e.g. Photographers, PR, Sponsors, community/arts activities etc).

Western Australia is staking a claim on the art world!
Our State, that is so rich in talent, has created the most exciting and prestigious exhibition event yet. THE BLACK SWAN PRIZE FOR PORTRAITURE

The Black Swan Prize for Portraiture is poised to become a major player in Australian portraiture competitions by establishing a valid alternative to the Eastern State Portraiture Prizes, namely the Archibald Prize, Shirley Hannan Portrait Prize, Doug Moran Portrait Prize and the Portia Geach Portrait Prize.Beginning with the 2007 Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, to be held at the historic Perth
Town Hall in September, this inaugural competition will be a special retrospective exhibition featuring selected portraits from Western Australian artists who have entered artworks into the controversial Archibald Prize. Featuring valuable and historical works never before exhibited in
Perth.
The 2007 Black Swan Prize will be a competition whereby the public votes for the winning paintings, giving the people of
Western Australia the opportunity to have a say in which Archibald Prize entries they consider to be the best.
From the following year, 2008 onwards, the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture will emerge as a prestigious portrait competition in its own right. This exhibition effectively becomes a precursor event to the Archibald. It will give Western Australian artists the opportunity for their work to be seen by the public, regardless of whether or not they are chosen as finalists for the Archibald. The exhibition will generate excitement, fun, controversy and debate as the public votes for who they think will make it into the Archibald Prize finals. The event incorporates opportunities for community workshops and lectures to be hosted by Archibald Prize entrants as well as fundraising activities. All money raised by this event will go towards the Starlight Children’s Foundation and other nominated charities. Please note that the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture is a signature event for Artopia, the artist’s festival of WA. For further information, or if you just want to say hi, please call Tina Wilson on 0432 275 690 or email tinawilson@iinet.net.au
